Dr. Kwon Ik-chan and Dr. Kim Kwang-myeong Named among the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds
for 3 Years Running
- KIST is the only national research institute with more than one researcher on the list -
On September 21, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) announced that Director Kwon Ik-chan of the Biomedical Research Institute and Dr. Kim Kwang-myeong have been named among the world’s most influential scientific minds for 3 years running.
Recently, Thomson Reuters analyzed 128,887 research papers in 21 different fields published between 2004 and 2014, then selected 3,200 researchers as ‘Highly Cited Researchers.’ In the field of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Dr. Kwon Ik-chan and Dr. Kim Kwang-myeong from KIST have been included on the list for 3 years in a row.
Out of 26 domestic researchers listed in 2016, only 13 have been named 3 years running. And from among those 13, only Dr. Kwon and Dr. Kim come from national research institutes.
The listed researchers are recognized as being close to winning the Nobel Prize. Thomson Reuters uses the Web of Science database to analyze research papers published throughout the world and determine how many times each paper is cited over the course of a year. Only those researchers whose achievements are recognized as among the world’s top 1% are named ‘Highly Cited Researchers’.
