KIST Hosts the 9th Hongneung Forum

- Discussed Hongneung’s role as a hub for innovative business startups and job creation

On June 22, at its headquarters in Seoul, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) held the 9th Hongneung Forum with attendance from about 400 people, including some celebrities.

The Hongneung R&D Complex has a 2 km-radius campus in which KRW 1.5 trillion in high-tech R&D projects are conducted by approximately 5,000 researchers with Ph.D. or equivalent degrees. It is considered the best spot for realizing certain aspects of the Korean government’s agenda, such as fostering high-tech business startups, creating high-quality jobs, and responding to the 4th Industrial Revolution.

This year, the forum was presided over by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies’ president, Dr. Kim Myung Ja, who took over as president of the forum’s board of directors. The forum’s most heated moments came via debate sparked by the topic “Era of the 4th Industrial Revolution: Hongneung’s Role as an Innovative Platform.”

Lee Kwang Ryeol, director-general of KIST’s Technology Policy Research Institute, presented strategies for the Hongneung R&D Complex to grow into a high-tech innovation hub and a development model for northeastern Seoul.

This was followed by a panel discussion, attended by Dr. Oh Se-jung, member of the National Assembly; Dr. Yeom Jaeho, president of Korea University; Dr. Moon Kil Choo, president of the University of Science and Technology; Dr. Hahn Sunhwa, president of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information; Dr. Kwak Jae-won, professor at Seoul National University; Dr. Seo Wang Jin, president of the Seoul Institute; and Mr. Kim Jin Doo, president of the Korea Science Journalists Association.

The participants discussed specific plans for utilizing the Hongneung R&D Complex to help realize the national agenda. In addition, they encouraged Hongneung, which served the country as an economic/industrial think-tank for last half-century, to contribute to the building of a “new Republic of Korea.”

It is anticipated that other important city governments officials, National Assembly members, and presidents of the forum’s 16 member institutions will also participate in the forum by helping to develop specific policies and implementation plans.
