Dr. Woo Seunghoon Is KIST’s “Person of the Month”

- Outstanding contributions to next-generation electronics

On July 18, Dr. Woo Seonghoon from the Center for Spintronics received KIST’s Person of the Month Award in recognition of his excellent research.

Through joint research with researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Woo was the first person in the world to prove the idea behind high-speed, low-power magnonic devices based on spin waves. The specific mechanism for this technology is magnetic domain wall depinning assisted by spin waves, the possibility of which had previously been theoretical only. As a result of his research, he was published as first author of an article in Nature Physics, a prestigious physics journal, and his work is being praised for opening the door for zero-power memory devices.

On another front, Dr. Woo and his team of Korean researchers discovered a physical phenomenon that can be applied to next-generation broadband communication devices―namely, that the dynamics of magnetic skyrmions can be controlled by the spin-orbit torque on the nanosecond time scale. This achievement resulted in his being published as first author and corresponding author of an article in Nature Communications, contributing to the advancement of skymion-based, ultra-low power-consumption and high-efficiency next-generation communication devices.

KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Candidates are nominated by their supervisors, and winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
