KIST Hosts Science Camp for Middle School Students

- Lectures and mentoring for future scientists

From August 10 to 11, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) held the 6th KIST Science Camp for Middle School Students at its headquarters in Seoul. Intended as a way of giving back to the community, the camp was available to participants free of charge.

Participants attended lectures on various technologies that address such social issues as “fine dust” pollution and ageing societies, and they conducted experiments into energy conversion or carbon-based new materials. Furthermore, the newly-introduced Mathematics Museum program offered valuable information and experiences regarding the latest mathematical advancements. Throughout the event, student researchers from KIST made themselves available to consult with middle schoolers on what science and engineering career path might be right for them.

Kim Soo-hyun, a student at Hagye Middle School, expressed his enthusiasm for the event by saying, “I am very eager to meet researchers working in the S&T field. I applied for this camp so I could learn from KIST scientists about how S&T will someday change our lives. I also look forward to lively discussions with fellow science lovers.”

Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, president of KIST, stated that “the camp was designed to make science and technology more accessible to middle schoolers looking for a wide range of experiences before deciding upon their future careers. KIST will provide education and other means of support to this new generation of scientists, and we will continuously strive to give back to the community through this and other socially constructive events.”
