KIST Gangneung and Kolon Life Science Sign Licensing Agreement

- Anti-aging and skin regeneration extract from Mongolian medicinal herbs

- Commercialization of new ingredients expected to impact the global cosmeceutical market

On August 22, the KIST Gangneung Institute of Natural Products signed a licensing agreement with Kolon Life Science to promote joint research into new ingredients for anti-aging and skin-regenerating cosmetic products, and then transfer this know-how to businesses.

The agreement was made possible by Dr. Nho Chu-Won, whose team successfully extracted a new substance from stellera chamaejasme, a traditional Mongolian medicinal herb used by Mongolian soldiers at the time of Genghis Khan. It is a substance that promotes the relocation of keratin cells, the production of collagen, and the suppression of wrinkles.

Dr. Nho’s team discovered the stellera chamaejasme extract’s anti-aging mechanism and published this information in the 2017 edition of the renowned academic journal “Scientific Reports.”

Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, president of KIST, stated, “Given worldwide interest in anti-aging and wellbeing products, we expect this technology transfer to create high added-value in both the global and domestic cosmeceutical markets.”

Mr. Lee Woo-suk, CEO of Kolon Life Science, added that “by commercializing this material, we expect to open up an entirely new market.”
