Dr. Cho Young-Wook Is KIST’s “Person of the Month”

On April 24, Dr. Cho Young-Wook from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Center for Quantum Information received the KIST Person of the Month Award in recognition of his outstanding research.

Dr. Cho’s team demonstrated the geometric phase that results from quantum measurement back-action. This advances our understanding of quantum physics and facilitates quantum information-based applications that take advantage of the geometric phase.

Their work was enabled by harnessing the underpinning technologies necessary for quantum computing-related tasks such as quantum circuit realization and quantum measurement. Through their efforts, researchers can now precisely control the inevitable back-action from quantum measurements, and a sophisticated quantum measuring device that uses qubits was devised to investigate the geometric phase even further.

Thanks to such advancements, Dr. Cho and his team were first in the world to show the interconnectivity of the geometric phase, quantum measurement back-action, standard quantum measurements, and weak values―things not previously known to be related. Their work was published in the April edition of Nature Physics.

KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
