KIST Unveils 3D Glasses-free Display at CES 2017
- KIST’s first independent booth in 50 years

On January 5-8 at Las Vegas’ CES 2017, the world’s largest exhibition of home appliances and information technology, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) exhibited new 3D glasses-free display technology developed by its Robot and Media Research Division’s Imaging Media Research Center.

This commercial-ready technology is the result of 15 years of optical research led by Dr. Kim Sung Kyu, and it enables high-quality 3D images, enhanced definition, and enlarged 3D viewing ranges without the need for 3D glasses. It is readily applicable to the personal displays found on smart phones, laptops, and PC monitors, and it shows great social and economic potential if successfully commercialized.

Dr. Kim’s team has already transferred this technology to a global enterprise, and a product prototype can be seen in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games Information Center.

“Participating in this year’s CES is a good opportunity to have this technology evaluated at the global level, as well as to identify international trends that could lead to new research strategies,” said KIST President Lee Byung Gwon.

KIST’s booth was located in the Westgate Paradise Event Center. Last year, KIST’s smart toy division jointly operated a booth with its research partners.
