Dr. Doh Jung Mann and Dr. Moon Myoung-Woon Are KIST’s “Persons of the Month”
On December 21, Dr. Doh Jung Mann from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Materials Architecturing Research Center, and Dr. Moon Myoung-Woon of KIST’s Computational Science Research Center, received KIST’s Person of the Month Award in recognition of their outstanding research.
Dr. Doh’s team developed a form of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coating that can be used on semiconductors or applied to aerospace and military hardware. This technology is currently undergoing the patenting process, and has been transferred to a domestic middle-sized enterprise. Prototype products with this new form of PEO coating were sold to a major domestic company, evidencing the coating’s market value.
Meanwhile, Dr. Moon’s team developed the world’s first nano-based technology for preventing marine pollution. This “nano oil-scooper” was crafted via nanostructuring and operates as a sieve that removes oil from polluted water at the sites of oil spills. This technology effectively reduces the environmental damage and negative economic impact caused by such spills. It is easy to use, requires no power source, and enables recovery of the spilled oil. The technology was transferred to Cheongsu Industry and is expected to be successfully commercialized for the global market.
KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
