KIST Hosts the First UK-KIST Ageing Brain and Dementia Symposium

- Lectures by prominent British scholars and information exchanges on new trends in brain diseases studies

On October 18 at its Seoul headquarters, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) hosted the first UK-KIST Ageing Brain and Dementia Symposium. Organized and sponsored by KIST’s Brain Science Institute, the event was attended by about 100 brain scientists, including four prominent scholars from Oxford, Cambridge, and Bristol.

The event provided a venue for seeking proper treatment for afflictions (such as degenerative brain diseases) common to ageing brains, as well as for fostering information exchanges and discussions on new trends in basic brain research and the study of brain diseases. In particular, prestigious brain scientists from Korea and the United Kingdom―including Dr. Peter St. George-Hyslop, a renowned specialist in degenerative neuronal diseases studies at Cambridge―presented the outcomes of their recent research and committed themselves to various joint research projects.

In addition to the presentations, a panel discussion entitled “The Challenges of Ageing Brain Research: Bringing New Ideas from the Bench to Bed and Care” inspired lively debate among attendees. Participants expected the joint research projects to bring about open research for developing new cures for common afflictions in ageing brains.

Dr. Oh Uhtaek, director-general of the Brain Science Institute, said, “I expect today’s symposium to generate lively exchanges and joint research projects among researchers from the UK and Korea, resulting in new technologies that will prove competitive on the global market.”
