Dr. Cho Young-Wook and Dr. Kim Jinwook Are KIST’s “Persons of the Month”

 


On February 28, Dr. Cho Young-Wook from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST)’s Center for Quantum Information, and Dr. Kim Jinwook of KIST’s Center for Imaging Media Research, received KIST’s Person of the Month Award in recognition of their outstanding research.


In the field of quantum computing, Dr. Cho’s team successfully measured the sequential weak values of two incompatible observables―something previously considered impossible in the field of quantum physics. They also devised an efficient method for verifying the quantum computing process, an achievement that was published in the January 2018 edition of Nature Communications and is expected to greatly contribute to humanity’s understanding of quantum informatics.


Dr. Kim’s team developed a breakthrough new technology for enhancing customized sports gear by more accurately measuring the arches and contours of the human foot. As a result, they took second place at the 17th Computational Design and Engineering (CDE) Competition held by the Korean Society for CDE, and won a Young Investigator Award at the 7th Asia Conference on Kinesiology. Products based on their work were exhibited at MAGIC (a clothing and accessory tradeshow) for the past two consecutive years. KIST transferred this measuring technology to Young Chang Eco for a down payment of KRW 100 million and a licensing fee of 5%.


KIST’s Person of the Month Award recognizes and rewards overachievers who contribute to the institute in creative, innovative ways. Winners are selected by the Reward Deliberation Committee.
