Development of a novel manufacturing technology for increasing active ingredients in red ginseng


1. Research Content & Characteristic

      O The goal of research is to develop a novel processing technology of red

         ginseng using ultra-high frequency with high economy and high efficiency,

         comparing with conventional process of ginseng. It consists of two parts:

          - The active ingredients, Ginsenoside Rg3, Rk1 and Rg5 from red ginseng, has been

               investigated in their biological activities. A conventional process has a limitation in large

               scale process. Single component in red ginseng is imported and selling at the same price

               of taxol.

           - A novel process based on physical process using irradiation of ultra high frequency for 30

             min can produce ginsenoside ingredients (Rg3, RK1 and Rg5) with 40 fold increase in

             contents and minimized side-effect.



2. Scientific and Technological Value

       O The ginseng processed by ultra high frequency contains more than 95% of major

          ginsenoside components. Moreover, there is a possibility to develop as single

          component product and natural product medicine.

       O Although ultra high frequency is conventionally applied to chemical reaction and

          heat/extraction of natural medicinal ingredients, this ultra high frequency is

          applied for the chemical conversion of natural product second metabolites.

          Furthermore, this technology will contribute to develop a high value product from

          limited natural products in Korea.


3. Social and Economic Effect

       O Vitalization of development of high value product in natural medicine/industrial

          bio field.

       O Creation of new industrial field to develop natural medicine/industrial bio row

          materials, based on combing with natural products and engineering technologies.

       O Creation of industrial and farm profit based on development of high value


       O Improvement of national health and the quality of life.
