Development of Biodegradable Magnesium Alloy Made of Essential Minerals to Human Body


1. Content & Characteristic

       O Development of biodegradable Mg alloy for application in orthopedics & plastic 

          surgery while earning approval from Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for

          clinical trial.

           - Medical implants made with these materials are expected to reshape the landscape of the

             fracture treatment field since it degrades completely after 6 months to 2 years of implantation

             into human body and makes the current required second operation to take out the implant

             after patient recovery obsolete.

           - The key point of newly developed technology is matching potentials between the matrix of

             metal and the phases dispersed through the matrix to overcome the fundamental weakness

             of the most Mg alloys, which degrade rapidly. New innovative materials can be developed

             by applying this technology to Mg alloy with the 2nd and 3rd additional elements while still

             maintaining the electrochemical nature of pure metal.

           - Successfully developed a high strength/low biodegradation rate Mg alloy made of basic

             elements and minerals essential to the human body




2. Scientific and Technological Value

       O This research is important in terms of developing novel biodegradable medical

          devices which can overcome the limitations of the conventional medical devices

          made out of bioinert titanium. It provides the foundation for future research

          application of Mg on various kind of medical implants.
