1. Content &Characteristic

O Using a combination of tools, including genetics, pharmacology, physiology, and microstimulation, we reveal that the thalamus, controlled by the mGluR1-PLCb4 signaling pathway, can modulate fear extinction bidirectionally through their firing modes.

- The tonic firing in thalamic neurons critically contributes to extinction learning as shown in normal and pathological conditions, whereas increased burst firing has suppressive effect on extinction as shown in the mutation.

O The thalamus plays a role in the control of emotional circuitry linking the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala.

Economic Effect

O The knock-out mice of PLCβ4 as an animal model of post-traumatic stress disorder, an inhibitory role of T-type Ca channels in fear extinction, an acceleratory role of tonic firings in the thalamus, and rescue effect of tonic-evoking microstimulation on impaired fear extinction are important to develop the treatment of anxiety disorders.
