The biggest contributor to the “Whisen” air conditioner’s worldwide popularity is plasma surface modification technology, a new concept technology to process and treat metal surfaces in special ways using plasma, thereby changing the nature of metal and its response to water. In collaboration with LG Electronics, a KIST team (led by Seok Geun GOH) succeeded in developing this innovative technology in 2000 after only four years of research. Research success led to the birth of the “Whisen” air conditioner, which eliminates condensation on metal surfaces. The original technology was also used to develop an audio device similar to a piece of paper, the first of its kind in the world. This development is currently being commercialized by Ion Techno. The applications of plasma surface modification technology continue to expand to include a tactile sensor for robots as sensitive as the human skin, accelerating sensors, electronic scales, theft alarms, and sonar devices. Further exciting innovations from this technology are expected to improve everyday life in the future.
