Project Name Identification of the principles of the brain’s pain control, learning, and memory
Year 2000 Director
Recently a KIST team (led by Hee Sup SHIN) discovered for the first time in the world how the pain control mechanism of the brain works. Attracting widespread international attention, this research proved the existence of the inhibitory sensory signal regulation of the thalamus, which had previously only been theorized, and discovered the core mechanism to regulate the conscious and unconscious states of the brain. The significance of this study is huge, with implications for sleep control as well as the treatment of epilepsy and pain, and it allows Korea to take the lead in global competition to develop brain disease treatments using new pain control mechanisms. The team has also identified the basic principles of brain functions and suggested ways to increase learning and memory ability through research into mutant mice.
