Project Name Synthesis of industrial diamonds and development of thin film technology for artificial diamonds
Year 1980 Director
Used to process ultra-light materials, concrete and stone materials, industrial diamonds are synthesized under high temperature and pressure conditions. The pressure required for synthesization is 45,000 bar or higher and the temperature should be at least 1,400°C. A team (led by Gwan Yong EUN and Jong Gu PARK) at KIST participated in the developmental project of copper-clad steel wire manufacture technology (by Il Gu GANG and Dong Nyung LEE) in 1973 and succeeded in developing a new technology to synthesize diamonds in collaboration with Iljin Diamond, an affiliate of Iljin Metal, making mass production of industrial diamonds in large quantities possible. Iljin Diamond grew to dominate the world diamond market next to De Beers, thanks to the commercial manufacturing of industrial diamonds in 1990. Its effects on import replacement in the domestic market have amounted to 400 billion won and have also served to strengthen the technological competitive edge of Korean companies. Patterned on Iljin Diamond, Ehwa Diamond Industrial is the fourth largest player in the global market, followed by Shinhan Diamond Industrial, the fifth largest player. KIST’s other related technologies such as diamond carbon thin film VCR head drums (Gwang Ryul LEE, 1994), vapor phase growth of diamond film (Yung Jun BAEK, 2000), and cutting tools coated with diamond thin film (Yung Jun BAEK, 2003) have also been transferred to industry and are being used by Daewoo Electronics, Iljin Diamond Industrial, and Precision Diamond.
