People became increasingly aware of environmental issues in the 1980s when treatment of livestock wastewater surfaced as the biggest problem for livestock farmers in Korea. The old treatment processes were not able to solve most of the problems with livestock wastewater. Processes introduced from other countries were tried but not widely accepted among livestock farmers due to their high costs and limited effectiveness. The new technology developed by a KIST team (led by Wan Cheol PARK) finally resolved all problems associated with the complete treatment of livestock wastewater. This technology was praised as the optimal technology to completely treat nitrogen and phosphorous - known to be the most difficult to treat - while maximizing stability with reasonable costs.
