Project Name Development of an artificial heart-lung machine and operative suture

The membrane artificial heart-lung machine developed by a KIST team (led by Eun Yung KIM and Jae Jin KIM) is a one-time artificial organ to replace the heart and lungs when they have stopped working during an operation. It adopts a polymer membrane  more advanced than the old bubble membrane in terms of manufacturing technology and clinical aspects. It also uses a hollow fiber membrane which has tiny holes through which only carbonic acid gas and oxygen are exchanged without any blood loss through the capillary fiber membrane walls. The team also developed an external flow technology using a hollow fiber membrane. All these developments have substantially increased the safety of large operations such as heart surgery. The membrane artificial heart-lung machine set accompanied by a heart-lung blood circuit showed successful clinical test results and was commercialized by the Green Cross Co., Ltd. in the early 1990s. Its effects on import replacement and exports sales amount to 6 million dollars a year. Also developed by KIST was the operative suture which is degradable inside the human body and causes no side effects as it degrades and is absorbed inside the body after surgery. Although dominated by the U. S. and Japan, the market is opening to this type of suture which was developed by a KIST team  led by Ahn Gwang-deok and Kim Yeong-ha. This product has been shown to be superior to its competitors in every aspect including elasticity, convenience, stability with a knot, and biodegradable features. Samyang has commercialized this new technology, exporting more than 10 billion won and saving 5 billion won from import replacement every year.
