Project Name Development of a drug synthesis technology for clonorchiasis
Year 1980 Director
Even into the 1980s liver and lung flukes were considered to be fatal parasites for which there was no treatment. However, these parasites are about to disappear into history now that a KIST research team (led by Chung Seop CHOI) has succeeded in developing a very economical and simple drug synthesis method, totally different from conventional methods, based on its own technological capacity. Shingpoong Pharm. is currently dominating the world drug market for clonorchiasis and pulmonary distomatosis with its treatment based on the new method developed by KIST. KIST’s other new drugs include a tuberculosis drug, ethambutol (by Yeong Bok CHAI), an antibiotic, netilmicin, (by Jung Hyup KIM), and Sepiramid (세피라미드)(by Jang Mun-ho), which have been transferred to Handok Pharmaceuticals, Reyon Pharmaceutical, and Chong Kun Dang Pharm., respectively.
