Project Name Development of high-strength aramid fiber

The Fiber Polymer Team at KIST (led by Han Sik YUN and Tae Won SON) succeeded in developing a new aramid single fiber technique by using a growth and self-ordering mechanism to allow for polymerization and molecular orientation at the same time. The new technique proved to be not only an innovative single process but also an entirely new substance, thus earning a substance patent in Korea, Europe and Japan in 1984. Boasting superior heat- and wear-resistant features, this synthetic fiber can replace asbestos which has long been used in the industry but is known to cause lung cancer. Its applications include automobile brakes, various types of clutches and gaskets, and construction materials. The team’s research results regarding the new fiber were published in the world-renowned journal, Nature (1987, Vol. 326), and the related technology was transferred to Kolon Co., Ltd.
