KIST Obtains Laboratory KOSHA-MS Certification
On December 22nd, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Seok-Jin Yoon) announced that it had held a "Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems (KOSHA-MS)" signboard hanging ceremony at its headquarters in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. KOSHA-MS is a certification system managed by the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency for institutions which efficiently allocate and systematically manage their physical and human resources in the workplace to prevent accidents and create and maintain an optimal work environment for staff. A total of 48 criteria, including the safety and health management system itself, activity level, and interviews with management officials, are evaluated.
Since 2021, when Seok-Jin Yoon took office as its President, KIST has implemented a safety and health management policy that puts safety and health first, and has been conducting activities to prevent laboratory accidents and create a safe research culture. As a result of these efforts, KIST received the International Standard for Safety and Health Management System (ISO45001) certification in December 2021, and in 2022, 11 laboratories, the largest number of participating organizations, succeeded in obtaining certification. By acquiring the new Korea Standard (KOSHA-MS) certification in December 2022, KIST's safety and health management system is recognized by authorized professional organizations as conforming to both domestic and international standards.
Looking ahead, KIST plans to further strengthen its safety and health management system by promoting participation and communication centered on research sites, such as by expanding excellent safety management certification for laboratories so that researchers can focus on performing their research in a safe environment.
Seok-Jin Yoon, the President of KIST, commented, "The excellent safety management certification for laboratories and KOSHA-MS certification which were created this year shall serve as a turning point for safety and health management at KIST, and we will continue to improve the system and relevant operations so that safety can become an integral part of our organizational culture for all of the research and work we perform."
