Sungkyunkwan University Professor Tae-Il Kim Wins 25th Songgok Science and Technology Award
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST; President: Seok-Jin Yoon) announced that Tae-Il Kim, Professor of Chemical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University (President: Ji-Beom Yoo), was selected as the winner of the 25th Songgok Science and Technology Award. Professor Kim was awarded a certificate and a 20 million won prize at the opening ceremony for KIST’s 57th anniversary celebration, held on February 10th at KIST’s headquarters in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul.
Professor Kim is an expert on bioelectronic devices, and recently announced the results of a study on implementing a biomimetic bio-electronic device, an ultra-sensitive sensor that simulates a spider’s sensory organs. In addition, he has developed the world's first device simulating a viscous pad organ which can eliminate noise from around a spider's vibration sensory organ so only the necessary signals are transmitted. By applying this to bio-electronic devices, noise, the biggest obstacle to the commercialization of bio-electronic devices, is eliminated, proving that ultra-sensitive sensors can operate without noise. In addition, the sensing mechanism of the simulated spider vibration sensor was revealed, and the structural research necessary for sensor optimization was conducted, contributing greatly to the academic development of biomimetic electronic devices and next-generation smart wearable medical devices.
Professor Kim commented, "Even small insects have functions that we cannot imagine. This study is about the development of a new material that can selectively absorb the frequency of a physical force by simulating the vibration absorption function of insects. It is expected to be used as a new material that selectively absorbs and removes various noises and vibrations in real life, such as interlayer noise and automobile vibrations. We will continue to conduct leading research on biomimetic bio-electronic devices using new materials."
The Songgok Science and Technology Award was established in 1999 to commemorate the achievements of “Songgok” Dr. Hyung-Sup Choi, the first President of KIST and a former Minister of Science and Technology. The award honors those scientists who have developed new world-class materials or who have greatly contributed to the development of Korea’s national S&T sector and industrial economy by suggesting academic research and research management measures related to national S&T policies.
