Joint Development between KIST Europe and EU Joint Research Center on COVID-19 AOPs
KIST Europe has launched a research consultative group to investigate Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) for COVID-19 in the human body in conjunction with the European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM), an agency involved with the verification and evaluation of alternatives to animal testing methods under the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Union.
In 2019, KIST Europe developed a total of five new AOPs and applied for their registration with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), with three being selected for inclusion in the OECD Work Plan. In addition, in response to the spread of COVID-19 earlier this year, KIST Europe filed a new AOP exclusively for identifying the outcome pathway of COVID-19 in the human body, and agreed to further develop specific pathways and verify them as AOPs filed with the EURL ECVAM under the JRC.
The formation of a joint development research consultative group was discussed in detail following EURL ECVAM learning about the COVID-19 AOP from KIST Europe and sounding out the possibility for joint development and cooperation. In the future, the research consultative group will take the first steps to beginning a full-fledged research effort by defining the roles of each participating organization.
KIST Europe selected as its main research area “development of a framework for an endocrine disruptor AOP in the ecosystem,” and, based on its accumulated experiences in the field of environmental safety since 2018, has been analyzing the competitiveness of existing capacities and the possibility of research promotion in Europe through an evaluation committee consisting of internal and external experts. In addition, KIST Europe has been conducting research undertakings related to the Creative Convergence Research Project (CAP) with support from the National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST).
