KIST, KAIST, and KST to Pursue Joint Technology Commercialization

- Enabling SMEs to produce products domestically
- Helping convergence technology-based SMEs expand

On August 30, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), the Korea Science & Technology Holdings (KST), GD Plus, and GD Centron signed an agreement to assist GD Centron, a KIST spin-off company. The event took place at KIST’s Seoul headquarters.

GD Centron was established in August 2016 and become a KIST spin-off company in February 2017 thanks to KIST and KAIST’s joint technology transfer and KST’s cash investment.

From KIST, GD Centron received two technology transfers involving hollow-structure metal-oxide nano fabric, enabling it to manufacture and commercialize new gas censors for the Korean market, where over 90 percent of gas censors were imported.

GD Centron potentially offers an exemplary case of academia-research convergence technology commercialization, since it was founded on close collaboration among KIST (government-funded research institute; core technology research), KAIST (educational institution; cutting-edge technology research), and KST (technology commercialization), as well as on a cooperative network among private enterprises with production/marketing capabilities.

Dr. Lim Tae Hoon, vice-president of KIST, observed, “We hope this agreement will set the stage for improved academia-research technology commercialization. We expect for it to greatly contribute to SME growth and recruitment, through joint R&D for import substitution.”

Prof. Park Hee-Kyung, vice-president of KAIST, stated, “This agreement sends a message that KAIST President Shin Sung-Chul is dedicated to collaborating with various institutes and SMEs to create jobs. Moreover, we are glad to offer KAIST’s 4th Industrial Revolution core technology as a technological foundation for GD Centron.”
