KIST Announces Scholarship Program for International Students

- International organizations support students from developing countries in studying S&T in Korea

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) announced a new educational program funded by various international organizations and aimed at students from developing countries.

On November 27, in Rwanada, KIST signed an agreement for conducting joint research and human resource exchanges with the World Bank Partnership for Skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (PASET)―an initiative launched by the governments of Senegal, Ethiopia, and Rwanda in addition to private enterprises, research institutes, and educational institutions.

Under this agreement, starting in 2017, Ph.D. students studying energy and ICT at selected universities in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) will be given the opportunity to earn college credit by taking part in KIST research projects, studying advanced S&T, and learning about Korea’s history in the field. This scholarship program is intended to contribute to Africa’s S&T development and further global partnerships between Korea and Africa. Each year, the institute will select ten students from the SSA region to conduct Ph.D.-level research funded by the World Bank PASET.

To boost the region’s economic development, SSA governments and the World Bank PASET intend to strengthen their partnerships in the fields of applied sciences, engineering, and technology, and to increase the number of state-supported students studying abroad. KIST President Byung Gwon Lee said, “Through this memorandum of understanding (MoU), Korea’s advanced technology will greatly contribute to future S&T development in the SSA region and serve as a successful model for human resource exchanges between Korea and the SSA.”

In addition, KIST and the World Bank PASET agreed to vitalize the development of S&T curricula for researcher exchanges and to pursue new avenues of research cooperation with each other.

Furthermore, back in October, KIST signed an MoU with the Uruguayan National Agency for Research and Innovation (funded by the Inter-American Development Bank) and agreed to host two Uruguayan Ph.D.-level S&T students each year.
