KIST Holds Special Workshop for Vietnamese Officials
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) invited 15 Vietnamese government officials to participate in the Workshop on Capacity Building in S&T Policy Formulation, to be held at KIST’s Seoul headquarters on July 10-17.
Since 2015, KIST has annually hosted official development assistance (ODA) training programs aimed at helping developing countries advance their S&T and enhance their research capabilities. The programs consist of lectures, field studies, and the generation of action plans. Participants in past events include officials from the Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Technology (in 2015); S&T officials/researchers from Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru (in 2016); and professors from World Bank’s African partner universities (in 2017). This year, Vietnamese officials from S&T-related government organizations will be taught about Korea’s S&T development experience and policies, and they will be provided with policy-making suggestions applicable to the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST), which is located in Hanoi and closely modelled after KIST.
For this year’s program, KIST’s primary focus is to reveal the specific nature of the Korean government’s role in KIST’s founding, and to illustrate KIST’s experiences during its inception. Furthermore, researchers from KIST will team up with the Vietnamese officials to explore how VKIST can be operated in the most efficient and potentially successful way possible.
Dr. Lee Byung Gwon, president of KIST, stressed the necessity of S&T for transforming Vietnam into a modern industrial nation. His vision for the workshop is that it would inform participants about Korean S&T development while also strengthening the close partnership between KIST and Vietnam.
