KIST Holds Summer Science Programs for Students

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) hosted a series of special science programs for elementary, middle, and high school students on their summer vacation.

Initially, a total of 33 students participated in the 6th KIST Science Camp for High School Students, held from July 23rd to August 3rd. They attended lectures and observed experiments at four KIST centers (the Center for Glia-Neuron Interaction; the Center for Environment, Health and Welfare Research; the Center for Spintronics; and the Chemical Kinomics Research Center), and discussions were held on current research trends.

On August 2nd, 20 elementary school students from Seoul gathered at the Science Station―Korea’s first subway science museum―located in Sangwolgok Station. The event was co-organized by Lifeline Seoul, and participants were encouraged to take part in activities that taught them the fundamental concepts of coding.

On August 9th and 10th, 100 children entered the KIST Science Camp for Middle School Students, where they attended science lectures and participated in experiments. This year, KIST researchers introduced them to cutting-edge technologies such as soft robotics, artificial photosynthesis, and doping control.

A survey of 207 students who participated in previous versions of the KIST Science Camp for High School Students showed that 96% of respondents later majored in science and engineering, 98% viewed the camps as helpful in determining their major, and 58% said they were willing to continue their S&T-related studies at the postgraduate level.

KIST President Lee Byung Gwon stated, “As a premier national research institute, KIST is dedicated to the continual promotion of science, especially in terms of nurturing talented future scientists.”

KIST’s pubic science programs are provided free of charge and enable KIST to give back to the local Community.
